Leaders Rules for St.Cuthberts Swallet


St Cuthberts Swallet has been open for over 50 years and is in a good condition. The overriding imperative is to preserve St Cuthberts and yet keep it open for visiting cavers in a sympathetic way. To this end these rules, derived from long experience, are given .


  1. Parties are limited to 5 tourists + Leader.
  2. No persons under sixteen (16) shall enter the Cave,
  3. No novices. In the case of St Cuthberts a novice is someone that the Leader judges to be a risk to the cave or to the trip.
  4. A tackle fee, at the current rate, is payable by non-members of the BEC as a contribution to maintenance.
  5. Nothing may be taken into the Cave which might pollute it. Eg. no carbide lights.
  6. When possible, wash mud off clothing and equipment in streamway to avoid spreading it.
  7. All tourist parties must stay on the current tourist routes.
  8. Visits to any other series by experienced cavers are open to negotiation with Leaders if requested. Such persons should be encouraged to become Leaders.
  9. Care must be taken to avoid damage anywhere. Fragile formations on a route are indicated with a minimum amount of coloured tape.
  10. Vulnerable places, easily damaged, are listed. Here the Leader is required to give a warning to be careful and to be present at all times with no more than 2 tourists. Curtain Chamber; take great care at entrance formations and keep moving slowly into the Chamber to avoid inadvertent damage. September Series, this is suffering damage.   11. Do not use the following vulnerable and unnecessary routes Struggle Passage via Erratic Chamber Vantage Point to Cascade Rabbit Warren to the Fingers
  12. In addition; from time to time certain series or routes will be closed. Leaders must be aware of these.
  13. Write up all trips in the St Cuthberts Log for reference purposes.
  14. No digging to be undertaken in St Cuthberts without the permission of the Committee.
